As a Certified Part §107 drone pilot, and I teach in terms YOU can understand and relate to. I teach understanding, because understanding is the key to knowledge, and knowledge is the foundation of safety. When you see some material summarized, restated or repeated, that is the reason.
I’m certified as a Public Safety instructor by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and I passed the FAA’s Fundamentals of Instruction as well. I also passed the student pilot Ground School exam.
Part §107 test changes
New questions: If you’re taking the initial Remote Pilot knowledge test (meaning it’ll be your first time taking the Part 107 test to earn a Remote Pilot certificate), expect to now see a question (or several) involving flying drones at night. Specifically, the test will address aspects of nighttime flying, including:
- Collision avoidance with other aircraft
- Limited depth perception and difficulty of perceiving reference points during night operations
- Night physiology
- Lighting requirements
- Night illusions from the perspective of the remote pilot
For initial certification testing, more in-person testing sites are being added. You can schedule online with PSI at faa.psiexams.com/faa/login or by calling then at 1-800-211-2754 then menu #2(professional tests) then ask the operator for FAA or leave a message for FAA and you will receive a return call within 24hrs.
This is an accelerated course, designed to give you the maximum training in the minimum time.
Over 2.5 hours of video training, plus resources to review (approx 5-10 hours recommended)
Because of my unique background, and the way I write my courses, my students are prepared to score better on FAA exams. Your goal is to understand what you need to know to pass the FAA exam. This course represents your good investment toward that goal.
You want fly your drone commercially or for public safety. Now you can, by passing the FAA’s Remote Pilot Certification exam. The Drone Professor’s video lessons can help you get there. Around 1,000 students have signed up to take this course, both online and at live presentations.
The video portion runs over two hours, plus quizzes and final exams. You will need to devote additional time to reviewing the references, resource materials and downloads. The on-site presentation of this course requires one day or about 8 hours.
This course is also intended for Public Safety personnel, both sworn and non-sworn,who are interested in obtaining FAA Remote Pilot Certification or heads of agencies who need to train personnel to an equivalent level as required under a COA/Waiver.
The actual FAA Exam is not included in the course and must be scheduled and paid for through CATS/PRI to be taken at a local or nearby authorized testing agency (CATS/PRI). Information about that portion of the process is detailed in the final video or at FAA PSI EXAMS.
The Course:
The FAA lists specific subject areas which the UAV operator should know to prepare for the Remote Pilot Certification exam, as described in section §107.73 for “initial and recurrent knowledge tests” and in FAA-S-ACS-10, the Remote Pilot Small UAS Airman Certification Standards.
- (1) applicable regulations relating to small UAS rating privileges, limitations, and flight operation;
- (2) airspace classification and operating requirements, obstacle clearance requirements, flight restrictions affecting small UAS operation;
- (3) official sources of weather and effects of weather on small UAS performance;
- (4) small UAS loading and performance;
- (5) emergency procedures;
- (6) crew resource management;
- (7) radio communication procedures;
- (8) determining the performance of small UAS;
- (9) physiological effects of drugs and alcohol;
- (10) aeronautical decision-making and judgment
- (11) airport operations
- (12) maintenance and inspection procedures
- (13) Night Operations
This course contains 20 video lessons plus a bonus section on the licensing process, running over two and a half hours in all, updated, with the essential information you need to pass the FAA test. You can replay the videos in this course as many times as you like.
NOTE: As of January 13th, 2020, prior to taking the Unmanned Aircraft General Knowledge Exam, all applicants must establish an FAA Tracking Number (FTN) within IACRA. The FAA implemented this change so that they can “better track an airman consistently through their entire certification process and collect better data to support risk-based decision-making.”
The companion study guide textbook is available through several online sources, including the new, larger print version found at Barns & Noble. The eBook version is available from iTunes, Amazon Kindle, Smashwords and other sources.
Jean-Paul:
“I passed my UAG exam with 83%. Much tougher than I thought but your book definitely helped me pass.”Public employees seeking to earn training credit may submit the syllabus to their training officer for approval. The instructor is certified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and provides on-site instruction in many states around the U.S. .
This compact but easy-to-follow course is complimented by download resource materials for your additional review and study. FAA has said that preparation for the Part §107 exam should take 20 hours of study. Using this video course and reviewing the study and reference materials this video course can provide the basic framework and resources you need to complete that preparation in half that time, and pass the test. Over 450 students have enrolled in this course so far. Together, we’re building knowledge, which is the foundation of safety.You should not expect to watch this video course and immediately pass the FAA exam any more than you can watch a James Bond movie and expect to go to work for the CIA. The FAA exam is designed to test understanding, not memorization. The FAA has stated that it should take up to 20 hours of study to gain the knowledge necessary to pass the Remote Pilot Certification (UAG) exam and safely operate a UAV. This video course comprises the first two hours of that study. By focusing your attention on the most important parts this course could help you reduce that time to 10 hours. You can’t ride a bike by reading a book and you can’t learn how to read aeronautical charts or METARS without just doing it more than once. Understanding requires study. We’re here to get you started in the right direction with just the right amount of guidance. The student should download the indicated resources here or through FAA.GOV or purchase hard-copy versions online or at a local flight training center or book store.
- The bottom line is that, with over 800 trained, our students report passing the exam with an average grade better than 88%.
The 14CFR §107 includes a requirement for initial and periodic recurrent (24 month) testing for Remote Pilot Certification (RPC). While this course is in no way represented as an “official” FAA training course, the materials presented include twelve areas listed in §107.73, with a sample test to measure the student’s understanding of the materials presented. This course material is based on the most recent test standards published by the FAA in FAA-S-ACS-10 – (August 2016) and includes the listed resources for extended study. The FAA’s sample test is also provided.
Every effort has been made to provide correct information, and the course material is continually revised and updated in an effort to stay current with changes and adjustments from the FAA. References and sources are cited within the training material.
This course is designed for first time pilots for operation under 14CFR§107.
Pay particular attention to the Remote Pilot Knowledge Test Guide in the Downloadable Materials (Resources). Yes, you will need to study the resource material and practice skills like reading charts and METARS on your own (“learn by doing”) to gain those necessary skills.
To date over 1,000 students have taken this course online. This class DELIVERS for our students.
Here are a few of their comments:
- “As a hobby drone pilot looking to get into commercial flying, the rules and regulations seemed almost unfathomable and overwhelming. Mr. Trott has spent who knows how many hours putting this excellent course together and it shows in his excellent presentation, in-depth explanations and handy links to source material. The quality of his videos are excellent from the start to finish. After taking my first few lessons, I knew I would be able to grasp the concepts required to apply for the 107 exam and much of the fear was removed as I was guided through the various lessons in a logical, organized way. Mr.Trott took a very complex subject and broke it down into comprehensible segments with a conversational approach to teaching that made it all very accessible to me. I highly recommend this course to anyone looking to take the 107 or to just expand your knowledge about what it takes to safely and legally fly a UAS.” (Bret Barson)
- “Comparable courses I’ve seen are running in the $200-$400 range, making your course a tremendous bargain.” (Pat)
- “I passed the FAA remote airman’s certification on the first try. Honestly I felt like I was over prepared. …Thanks so much for making [this course] available.” (Gary)
- “I just finished your ground school course for small uav’s. I thought the course well done. All good stuff. Thanks for your dedication to the industry!!” (Tim)
- ” Thanks Tim!!! With this course and your e-book on Amazon, passed the test this afternoon.” (John)

This course is designed for first time pilots, hobby flyers wishing to “go commercial”, or those in Public Safety seeking to meet the Part 107 standards.
For the future commercial remote pilot, this training course represents a very good value for the small investment, or as one of our students put it “a tremendous bargain”.Part §107 spells out the requirements and standards for initial and periodic recurrent (24 month) testing for Remote Pilot Certification (RPC). While this course is in no way represented as an “official” FAA training course, the materials presented include all twelve areas listed in §107.73, with a sample test to measure the student’s understanding of the materials presented. Special attention is given to areas known to appear on the FAA exam, like charts and weather.
This course material is based on the test standards published by the FAA in FAA-S-ACS-10 and includes the listed resources for extended study. The FAA’s sample test is also provided. Every effort has been made to provide correct information, and the course material is continually revised and updated in an effort to stay current with changes and adjustments from the FAA. References and sources are cited within the training material.
There are quite a few courses teaching for the Remote Pilot Certification. Do not restrict yourself to this course alone. By all means, take advantage of as many as you can find and afford, and be sure to review the resources and references. Knowledge is the foundation of safety, and study is the building block of knowledge.
Some Remote Pilot Certification courses claim to have “Real FAA test questions”. The FAA DOES NOT make test questions public or provide them to any training providers. Why? The FAA wants pilots to learn by UNDERSTANDING, not MEMORIZING. The FAA does provide a SAMPLE exam.The questions are TYPICAL but they are NOT the “real” test questions. If you understand HOW to answer them you should succeed on the FAA exam. This course will take you through the sample test and explain the answers.
